The late Jerry Jeff Walker was relaxing in his dressing room at the New Daisy Theater in Memphis, Tennessee, prior to a show on Sunday, May 19, 1991, when members of his band came into the room and began to excitedly tell him about the opening act.

“‘You’ve got to come out and see this guy,’” Walker recalled them saying in a 2015 interview with Stacie Huckeba. “‘He’s solo playing. He’s tearing the room up doing like you used to do. He’s down in the audience and everything.’”
